Beautiful house with lots of charm in stunning village

We loved our stay here. Odile, the owner, could not have been nicer and the house was full of personal touches to make you feel instantly at ease. The location is perfect get the peacefulness and feeling of being away from it all, whilst having a number of the Luberon’s most beautiful towns and colourful markets nearby. A little gem…

Absolutely Stunning!!

The photos do not do justice to this jewel of a house, set into the exterior of the hilltop village of Saignon, with a wide view of a most beautiful valley. We were fortunate to arrive at the peak of flowering season for many plants, and were daily charmed by the lavender fields down in the valley below. Sheep were herded up the sleepy road past the lavender, and the acacia in bloom buzzed with bees. We loved sitting with our glass of wine or coffee out on the balcony, both morning and evening–at night there was a chorus of frogs from the valley!

The house itself has been very tastefully renovated and modernized with a view to making the most of the character of the old building yet with complete comfort. We thoroughly enjoyed the village too, which has a new (American-owned) café dedicated to setting forth the best of the French countryside and fresh ingredients, as well as two great traditional French restaurants. All of these are tiny, so getting a reservation ahead is recommended.

Odile, the owner of the house, was very helpful and anxious to make sure we had a good experience. We are a retired couple, our daughter and son-in-law and their 8 month baby, and we were perfectly comfortable. We had a wonderful time!

A comfortable home in a magical setting.

We spent three weeks in France this summer, and our week in the charming town of Saignon was our favorite.

This small town is tucked into a hillside overlooking lavender fields and the larger town of Apt. It is truly magical. Saignon is smaller than the other Luberon hill towns and has few tourists, even in July when we were there. We found this to be a perfect place to relax after a day of sightseeing. There are a few restaurants in the town, and a bakery (Chez Christine) where we enjoyed our coffee and her amazing pastries each morning. The people in the town were very warm and welcoming.

The house is very comfortable. Our two daughters, ages 9 and 12, felt immediately at home here. They enjoy exploring the small garden area in the back of the house, finding snails and frogs and watering the herbs and plants in the garden. The terrace at the back of the house overlooks lavender fields and the hillside leading down to the town of Apt. Each evening, we sat on the deck to watch the sunset. The lavender was in bloom when we were there. The field is so close to the house, that you can smell the lavender from the terrace. We felt instantly relaxed upon arriving from Paris, and will miss that gorgeous view!

We are so grateful to the owner of this home. She was so warm, kind, helpful and welcoming to us. We were stuck in a lot of traffic on our drive to Saignon, and were quite delayed in our arrival. She waited for us for hours and was so generous and accommodating to us, reassuring us, along the way. She carefully went over all of the details in the house when we arrived, even though it was 10pm by the time we arrived. She was very communicative to us throughout the entire process. She is truly wonderful!

We will miss this special place and hope to return someday! Thank you Odile!

Excellent stay in Saignon!

We loved staying at this house in Saignon. The house itself has been lovingly restored and includes all the amenities to make one’s stay as comfortable as possible.

The bed was comfortable, inviting living room, well appointed kitchen, etc but the terrace was where we spent as much time as possible (when we weren’t sightseeing elsewhere) because of the stunning views of the valley with its sunflower and lavender fields. The owner was very accommodating throughout the entire rental process and welcomed us personally when we arrived.

The village, with its huge rocky promontory, old church and graveyard and medieval streets, is very scenic and has a handful of shops to attract visitors during the day but is not overrun with tourists, making it quiet and restful. Saignon is close to Apt where we could shop for provisions at the butcher, cheese shop, bakery and larger stores as needed. It is within an 1 1/2 hours drive to Avignon, Arles, Cassis (beach at Mediterranean), etc and within 20-40 min drive to other hilltop villages like Roussillon, Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, Gordes, etc.

Great little bakery in town and a small organic market on Thursday. The region’s fruits and vegetables, olives, wine, cheese, etc are fantastic. We would highly recommend this house. It is spacious and can accommodate a family with children but is equally suitable for a couple (if you travel with another adults, only one room has a double bed but the two singles in one of the other rooms could be pushed together in a pinch). Also, you do need to rent a car to get the most out of travel in this region.

Beautiful home in an ideal setting.

Our family of five spent 5 wonderful weeks in Odile’s home. The house is beautiful, very well appointed and has everything one could ask for on a prolonged holiday.

The kitchen is well equipped and enabled us to easily prepare meals. The house is quite spacious and we were able to accommodate visiting family and friends. The stone walls and window shutters provided some welcomed respite from the hot July temperatures while the terrace, overlooking Apt and lavender fields provided us with countless hours of enjoyment. The kids had a blast playing in the garden, setting up some snail races, and playing ping pong under the covered patio.

When we arrived on a Sunday evening, much later than originally anticipated, Odile diligently took us though the house despite being late for a family dinner. She provided us with detailed instructions for all appliances and equipment, supplied books, games, movies, guide books, maps etc. and made herself available for whatever inquiry we might have during our stay.

Odile makes sure that her guests feel right at home. The cupboards were stocked with staples to tie us over – coffee, sugar, rice, pasta…, she had picked fresh herbs from the garden, and offered us a lovely welcome gift – delicious fig jam. Needless to say, we felt very welcomed and right at home in no time!

Saignon is a beautiful, quiet medieval village overseeing Apt. Our kids, aged 12, 9 and 6 made their way daily to ‘Chez Christine’ to pick up our breakfast baguette and croissants. We had very pleasant meals at “La Maison de Solveig” and at the food truck “le restaurant ephemere du Chalet des Saveurs” that sets up shop on the Place des amandiers after July 1. Some of the village’s summer festivities that should not be missed – La Fête de la Musique (Jule 21) and the Paella night which gathers the whole village and sells out fast!

The town of Apt, only a 5-minute drive away, has all the shops one could wish for and its Saturday market is one of the best ones in Provence. Overall, Saignon makes a great base from which to explore the region, and a stay at Odile’s house is sure to make a visit to Provence an unforgettable experience!
